  • Is e-mail spam on the decline?

    Updated: 2010-12-30 16:22:05
The fourth quarter of 2010 saw a definitive drop in the amount of junk e-mail we received, according to a report on Health Net Security. An 18 percent drop in global spam levels had already been reported in October of 2010, and the site says spam dropped even further this quarter: December’s daily average was around 30% less than September's. The average spam level for the quarter was 83% down from 88% in Q3 2010. The beginning of December saw a low of nearly 74%. This is welcome news, of course! But despite recent crackdowns on spammers, don't expect spam to go away altogether. Stay on your guard against scams, such as phishing, and take overall measures to keep yourself safe online. —Carol Mangis

  • CES 2011 Preview: What we'll see in tablet computers

    Updated: 2010-12-29 05:16:38
One thing just about everyone can agree on: the 2011 Consumer Electronics Show next week will feature a abundance of tablet computers. CR senior electronics editor Donna Tapellini concurs. Though a slew of would-be Apple iPad challengers hit the market toward the end of 2010, only the Samsung Galaxy Tab was a worthy competitor. But Donna says that will likely change, as numerous other major manufacturers announce their own tablets at CES. Expect to see much emphasizing of features that the iPad doesn't (yet) have, like USB ports, Flash compatibility, and memory card slots. Take a look at our preview video for more tablet preditions. And check back here for breaking tablet news from CES next week! —Carol Mangis
